 ABOUT THE FESTIVAL

As described on the History page, the Nipigon Fall Fishing Festival is more than a fishing derby.

It is a chance for families, friends and visitors to get together and have an enjoyable time.

What makes the event more than a fishing derby?  Follow the parade that begins in downtown Nipigon and finishes at the arena.  While you’re at the arena, make sure you enjoy the booths, raffles, food, entertainment and prizes.  If you feel like getting some fresh air you can go geocaching, go outside and watch a baseball game, take in the antique car display, participate in races or test your skills in the Firemen’s Challenge.  If you need a chance to relax, come on over to the curling club and see some fish being entered.  Later in the afternoon, you can grab something to eat at several locations and take in the dance if you like.  On Sunday evening don't forget about the entertain-ment and firewords t the waterfront.  Check out the Schedule Page for a complete listing of events during this year’s festival.

The Nipigon Fall Fishing Festival has been a family oriented festival since 1965.

The different activities offered are intended to cover all age ranges so everyone can have fun.

All Family and Huck Finn derby prizes are awarded by luck of the draw.  Why?

It was never the intent of the festival to compete with other “competitive” fishing derbies in the area.  We encourage husbands and wives or husbands, wives, sons and daughters to participate as a family.

By offering a level playing field for all participants, the committee feels everyone can have fun throughout the weekend.  Why do we limit the number of fish that can be entered and specify the size and condition of fish to be entered?  The committee recognizes that our natural resources have provided us with a good lifestyle.  We would like to ensure it is available for future generations.

Many local volunteer organizations benefit from the festival.  These organizations provide essential services to our community and other larger organizations.  Your participation helps them in their efforts.  For the past number of years the festival has also provided a bursary to a local student who is continuing their post secondary education.  Applications can be made by writing a short letter to the committee.  Our local businesses and merchants also benefit from the festival.

In 2008 the festival received a grant from the Province of Ontario through the Celebrate Ontario Program.  The festival  committee has used the funds to purchase a $50,000 portable sound system, tables, chairs and speakers for the community centre, and removable sides for the gazebo at the marina.

In 2009 the festival received financial assistance from the Nipigon Centennial Committee.  These additional funds were used to increase the quality and variety of entertainment at the event.

In 2010 teh committee received funding through the Federal Government's Building Communities Through Arts and Heritage Program.  This funding was used to purchase additional equipment and entertainment for thefestival.
